LOST TO CITY LEAGUE
City League senior thirteen this season will be without the services of H. Mataira, one of the best forwards in Auckland. Mataira, who is in camp and will probablv be going overseas shortly with an Expeditionary Force draft, was a stalwart Hawke's Bay Rugby representative forward for six or seven seasons. He gained All Black honours in 1934 when he went to Australia with Frank Kilby's team. The following year he was again in Australia, on that occasion with the 1935 Maori All Blacks. A couple of seasons later Mataira switched over to the League code, and, coming north, joined up with City. His consistently good displays at Carlaw Park won him a place in the New Zealand League team which had just opened a tour of England and France when war broke out. A fine phvsical specimen, Mataira, it is stated, has gained a commission while in camp.
