STAFF SHORTAGE
HOSPITAL LAUNDRY
MINIMUM NEEDS ONLY
Reference to the shortage of workers "in the Auckland Hospital Board's- laundry was made by Mr. J. G. Bell, representing the board, at a sitting of the Auckland Industrial Manpower Committee this morning. An appeal was lodged by Mrs. Pearl Dawn Trotman on the grounds of domestic hardship against the refusal of the manpower officer to allow her to terminate her employment with the board as a hand ironer. The laundry was short of 15 hands, said Mr. Bell. In consequence of the shortage of staff, it was extremely difficult to provide for the minimum needs of the hospital. It was essential to get the staff back to normal strength. In the future provision would have to be made for the 39th General and the Middlemore hospitals. Machinery was being obtained from England to cope with the work, but extra hands would still be needed within the next four or five months. The committee reserved its decision.
