MAYOR OF AUCKLAND
"MISTAKE HAS BEEN MADE"
Thou eh the National Patriotic Fund Board approved Mr..C Meachen's appointment as. sick and wounded commissioner in the Middle wnnt, the Mayor of Auckland, Mr. Allum, who returned from Wellington last night, voted against the board's resolution tp this effect. Mr. Allum revealed this to-day when ' asked to comment on the statement issued by the board. _ "So far as the necessity for a commissioner is concerned, I must accept the opinion of the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society, who have had years of experience, laid Mr. Allum. "However, I think a mistake has been made regarding the actual appointment. After five yelrs of war it should have been possible to find a competent man with overseas war service to fill the PO « i l ti do , no t know Mr. Meachen personally, but all I have heard is entirely in his favour. I am actuated by the policy of giving preference to returned servicemen. It has been my duty and privilege to farewell larpe numbers of servicemen, and when I said I would do my best for their interests I meant it."
