HOSPITAL NEEDS
WHANGAREI INSTITUTION
NEW MATERNITY ANNEXE O.C. WHANGAREI, Tuesday. Provision of a new maternity annexe was the most pressing need, stated the medical superintendent, Dr. J. W. Hall, in his annual report to the Whangarei Hospital Board today. Last year admissions annexe totalled 434. The architect already had been instructed to prepare plans for a new annexe, but the site had yet to be decided upon. Other requirements reported by Dr. Hall were provision of an infirmary ward for chronic bed-ridden cases which, he said,' could well be accommodated in the present annexe building, a larger X-ray department, staffed by a full-time officer, and improvements to the children's ward. If the board could get the Department's consent to proceed with the building of a new nurses' home, the position would be' eased, said the chairman, Mr. J. A. S. MacKay. In planning the future needs of the X-ray department, much would depend upon whether provision would be necessary to meet requirements of the northern boards. The number of patients admitted during the year was 3454, of whom 100 died. Operations numbered 1850.
