CORRESPONDENTS' VIEWS

BAYSWATER BUSES (To the Editor) The North Shore Transport Company's bus drivers will refuse to operate their buses over the bad piece of road between Belmont and Bayswater unless it is repaired by Thursday night. The drivers state that the jolting is not only injurious to their health, but causes damage to the vehicles. They showed us- at their meetings Some evidence which points To injuries to seatings And universal joint*. The many mumbled cusses Are justified (a lot) When Takapuna buses Approached the dreaded spot. And men who fought in battle Will realise the state When molars start to rattle And hips to dislocate. The method to unravel The problem now is thought To tell the blokes who travel To "go to Devonport." But we at Takapuna At home could better stay (A? some of us would sooner Than go the other way.) But, versed in wild adventures, I say without a blush, I'd rather lose my dentures Than perish in the rush. B.C.H. The complaint of the North Shore bus drivers regarding the condition of portion of the Belmont-Bayswater Road will have the full support of local residents, whatever they may think of the threat of a stoppage o"f buses. But this is only one matter. Every street in Takapuna is in a disgraceful state, both footpaths and roads. Public reserves are neglected unless the nearby residents do the work themselves, the beach is dirty, and weeds and paspalum flourish. The fire service is outmoded, although all credit is due to the volunteer staff. It is some time now since a new council was elected, and no sign of improvement is evident. Surely whatever action is necessary should be taken by the ratepayers, not the bus drivers. What steps do the residents of Takapuna propose to take? D. R. SHEATH.
