SWIMMING FEATS OF SCOTS GIRL
Unknown Cathie Gibson. 13-year-okl product from the Motherwell swimming nursery, is the best backstroke prospect ever brought to my notice, states a Daily Mail contributor. Weighing only 6st 51b, this young Scot's home record is amazing. She has returned 73 3-5s for 100 yards, 1.59 for 150 yards, and covered a quarter-mile in 6.40. These -figures speak for themselves. I don't relish adopting a prophetic role, but for the past 20 years I have "written up" the majority of British women back-stroke champions long, before they made their mark in j public. And Phyllis Harding, Ellen King, l Joyce Cooper and-Helen Yate never approached the Scottish youngster's form in their "budding" stages. Obviously this newcomer will be a challenging force when the cham-j pionship programme is revived. j The New Zealand women's record !for 100 yards back-stroke is 745. t
