STOCK EXCHANGE

RESUMING ON MONDAY FAVOURABLE PROSPECTS FOR 194S Sliarebrokers will begin a new year on Monday, when Stock Exchanges throughout New Zealand will reopen after the summer vacation. When the Auckland Exchange closed on December 22 a good demand prevailed for a Wide range of securities, and buyers tended, to harden their reserves. Government issues were particularly scarce. Overseas the new year has qpened confidently on the markets in tondon and New York, and sharp rises on preholiday points are disclosed in the latest sharemarket indices. In Sydney operations resumed on a strong note, but an accurate assessment of market sentiment there has been difficult since ceiling price limits were established. "With favourable war news on most fronts and a high degree of liquidity continuing to mark the internal monetary position, prospects seem assured for active and firm conditions on the investment market when business resumes. It appears probable that peak wartime prices for many shares were reached in July and August last, and that investors are now becoming more selective and reviewing their holdings in the light of current yields and post-war possibilities. Restriction of dividends by high taxation can hardly be expected to be relaxed during 1945, so that a period of relatively stable values may be introduced, though, so many diverse factors influence share prices that forecasts can be easily upset. Following are quotations of several market leaders when the Auckland Stock Exchange closed for the holidays:— Buyers Seller*
