TWO SPIES FOR TRIAL
MEN LANDED FROM U-BOATS Rec. 11.30. WASHINGTON, Jan. 12. President Roosevelt has ordered that the two men who recently landed on the Maine coast from a submarine should be tried by a military tribunal and subjected to the laws of war.
The two German agents' arrest was announced rtt the beginning of this month, after they had been in the United States since November 29, when they landed in a rubber boat from an enemy submarine. They brought ashore more than 50,000 dollars In American currency, as well as equipment for radio work, sabotage and photography. Both had been trained in the S.S. school at The Hague. One was a United States citizen, having been honourably discharged from the United States Navy in 1943. He went to Europe on the diplomatic ship Gripsholm, but deserted In Lisbon and travelled to Germany with the help of the German Consul in Lisbon.
