CORRESPONDENTS' VIEWS
MUNICIPAL THEATRE
(To the Editor)
Mr. Allum is to be commended for his timely remarks regarding the necessity for an Auckland arts centre, and, more particularly, for a municipal theatre. Mr. Allum, by way of example, made reference to the "studendous difficulties" under which the Auckland Repertory Theatre stages its plays. From personal experience I know this to be, if anything, an understatenient of the position. And yet, despite these difficulties, the Repertory Theatre has maintained a high standard and, as Mr. Allum says, has doubled its membership in wartime. How much higher the standard would be with better facilities. In this country we have, in the past, watched our best brains and talent forced to migrate overseas in search of "a break." We have only ourselves to blame. What about it, citizens of Auckland? Why not give our actors, musicians, playwrights and authors a "break" here?
