ON MOKOIA ISLAND
VANDALISM ALLEGED DESECRATION OF RELICS O.C. ROTORUA, this day. It is reported that many holidaymakers visiting Mokoia Island in Lake Rotorua have been disgusted by the work of vandals, who have endeavoured to disfigure the historic kumara god. This relic of ancient Maori history should, it is considered in some quarters, be properly housed, and the matter taken up either by the Arawa Trust Board or the Rotorua Advancement Committee.
It is not generally realised that Mokoia Island is entirely Maori property, vested by a special Mokoia Island Act/and .that visitors to the island are allowed 'there through the courtesy of the native owners. Another deplorable feature is the manner in which a number of lunch boxes have been thrown Into the historic and picturesque Hinemoa bath on the island.
