BIG RESPONSE
WATERFRONT WORK
600 MEN ANSWER REQUEST
Large numbers of school teachers, factory workers, office workers and others on holiday at the present time reported at the waterfront this morning in response to the request made yesterday by the waterfront controller, Mr. W. J. Cuthbert, for about 400 men to assist in relieving congestion in the port. Many of those who reported wore R.S.A. badges.
Mr. Cuthbert stated this afternoon that about 600 men had responded to his request, and as many of these had been employed as the available crane-drivers permitted. All but 40 or 50 of the 600 workers would work either on the eight o'clock or eleven o'clock shifts. Twenty-three gangs, averaging about 50 to a gang, started work this morning.
Mr. Cuthbert added that a night shift would be worked on all but one vessel this evening, and that the position should be eased by the end of the week.
