LIVING ON YACHT
AND NOT WORKING CASE OF "ARMY REBEL" Describing himself as "a rebel from the Army," ana saying that he was living alone on a yacht in St. Mary's Bay and was not working, H. H. Goodsall appeared before the Auckland Industrial Manpower Committee to-day to appeal against a direction to Westfield as a freezing chamber hand.
Appellant said if he complied with the direction he would have to get up about 4 a.m. in order to get to Westfield on time, and would be correspondingly late in arriving back. In bad weather he would not be able to row ashore from the yacht. He was grade one, and since coming out of hospital three months ago he had not done any work. "Every fit man in New Zealand is expected to work," declared the chairman, Mr. J. O. Liddell. "You cannot be allowed to live without doing some work." Goodsall: Can't I work near the waterfront? The Chairman: No! Goodsall: Why not? The Chairman: You will have to go where men are required most. Appellant pointed out that he had worked in a brewery, and during; his Army service the firm had made l up his pay. Therefore, he considered | he had an obligation to the brewery firm.
The Ckairman: I don't go much on your excuse. Goodsall: I could not get a house or a room, as the Americans had invaded the country, so I had to live on my yacht. If I go to Westfield, how am I going to get my supplies? I will be getting back late. Telling appellant he could choose his time to get off his yacht, the chairman said that the committee would reserve its decision. Goodsall: I think I know it, just the same! The Chairman: I am not saying what it is.
