MISS PAGETS BAD BUY COMPETITION AT NEWMARKET Rec. 10.30 a.m. LONDON, Dec. 5. A record price for a two-year-old sold by auction was established at the Newmarket bloodstock sales to-day, when Mrs. P. Nagle bought the filly Carpatica, by Hyperion from Campanula, for 15,000 guineas. The trainer, Fred Darling, paid 7300 guineas for the three-year-old Monsoon, by Umidwar from Heavenly Wind, which ran second in the Oaks and fourth in the St. Leger. An Irish breeder paid 5100 guineas for the three-year-old Orestes, by Donatello 11. from Orison, which was unbeaten last season, but disappointed this year, and the Aga Khan sold the two-year-old by Barham from Una, for 5000 guineas. Miss Dorothy Paget, who paid 4000 guineas as a yearling for Clarendon, the half-brother to Sun Chariot, sola him to-day for 140 guineas. Mr. Horace J. Brueton, a prominent Midlands bookmaker, bought High Profit, by Hyperion from Pennycomequick for 4000gs, and the five-year-old sprinter Brunei for 3600g5. Ninety-five lots were sold the first day, and, although they Included many of moderate quality, the total paid was 41,750g5. The two-year-old filly Pukwana, by Papyrus from Concordia, shared top price at 4000gs, Mr. Peter Burrell, director of the National Stud, being the buyer. Merchant Navy, by Hyperion, failed to reach the reserve, but was subsequently sold for 2500gs to the British Bloodstock Agency, which is sending him to South Africa.
