VACANCY NOW FILLED

DEAN' CRUICKSHANK CHOSEN

(0.C.) NAPIER, Friday. The Anglican See of Waiapu, which has been vacant since the resignation of Bishop G. V. Gerard last April, is to. be filled, by Dean G. C. Cruickskank, of. St. Paul's Cathedral, Dunedin, who was elected at a recent session of the Diocesan Synod, over which Dean W. Fancourt, of Auckland, presided as commissary for the Primate, Archbishop West-Watson.

The synod's invitation to Dean Cruickshank was submitted to the bishops of the New Zealand province and to the standing committees of the other dioceses, and, when their approval had been obtained, it was transmitted to the dean, whose acceptance was announced to-night by the vicar-general of the diocese, Archdeacon J. B. Brocklehurst. No date has yet been fixed for the consecration of the new bishop.

Dean Cruickshank was horn in Auckland in 1882, and was educated at Keble College, Oxford, where he gained his B.A. degree in 190G, subsequently obtaining the M.A. degree. He attended the Ely Theological College in 1907, and in the same year was ordained deacon at Durham, where he was admitted to the priesthood in the following year. He was curate at St. Hilda's, Darlington, from 1907 until 1909, and in the latter year he returned to New Zealand and served for a time as a home mission priest in the Auckland diocese. The new bishop was appointed vicar of Whangarei in 1910, and after holding that position for three years he paid a visit to England, returning to the Dominion in 1914, where he was reappointed vicar of Whangarei. Mr. Cruickshank served as chaplain with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in France, and was wounded in the battle of the Somme in 1916.

After the war, he returned to his post at Whangarei, where he remained until his appointment as vicar of St. Mark's Church, Remuera, in 1923. He remained there until he became vicar of the cathedral district of Dunedin in 1932.
