Favourite Bracket First And Third In The N.Z. Trotting Cup

BRONZE EAGLE SWOOPS

Bexley's Pride Takes Riccarton Stakes: Lady Scott And Will Cary Dead-Heat In Chief Trot: Hilda Potts In Empire

In a great finish for the 1944 New Zealand Trotting Cup, Bronze Eagle beat Integrity by a length and a half, with Pacing Power three lengths farther away third. Four lengths back came Countless, with Haughty in fifth place. This was Bronze Eagle's third attempt to win the Cup, but it was the first occasion on which he had been trained by R. B. Berry.

Driven by the Australian horseman G. B. Noble, Bronze Eagle started smartly to be in eighth place with a mile and a half to go. Entering the last round, he moved up to be seventh, and improved on that position to be sixth into the straight. At this stage Integrity, which broke at the start and lost 100 yards, proceeded to mow down the leaders, and with a furlong to go Integrity g<# the lead, with Bronze Eagle in hot pursuit, and Pacing Power, Countless and Haughty under a hard drive. Over the last furlong the issue was confined to Bronze Eagle and Integrity, and after a great battle Bronze Eagle wore Integrity down.

At barrier rise Shadow Maid went into the lead and made the pace for two furlongs to Clockwork and Burt Scott, with Gold Bar dashing round the field. A little farther on Gold Bar got the lead and opened up a gap of three lengths from Shadow Maid, Clockwork, Burt Scott and Parshall, with Loyal Friend, Countless, Bronze Eagle, Horsepower, Pacing Power and Haughty racing in that order. Entering on the last round Countless moved up to take second place to Gold Bar, with Shadow Maid, Burt Scott, Clockwork, Loyal Friend, Haughty, Bronze Eagle and Pacing Power all racing in that order and in fairly close formation. Racing down the back straight Haughty moved into fourth Elace and, rounding the bend for ome, took the lead, with Pacing Power, Gold Bar, Clockwork, Countless and Bronze Eagle following in close order and Integrity making up his ground in brilliant style. With a furlong to go Haughty and Gold Bar were beaten, and Integrity raced-to the front, with Bronze Eagle challenging strongly and Pacing Power and Countless under a hard drive, A great finish ending in favour of Bronze Eagle. The first two furlongs were covered in 37 l-ss, half-mile in 1.8, six furlongs in 1.41, mile in 2.16 4-5, mile and a quarter in 2.4 i 4-5, mile and a half in 3.23 and the full distance in 4.27 4-5. The extra distance the horses covered was equivalent to four seconds to the mile. The bracketed horses Bronze Eagle and Pacing Power carried £3292 and £3855, Integrity £1755 and £2212. The amount invested on the race was £31,783, a record, the previous best being £30,836 last year. Won Comfortably ' Although Blue Horizon won the Christchurch Trotting Stakes by only half a length he was driven most confidently and had a good deal in hand at the winning post. One of the back-markers, he started quickly to take second place and when three furlongs had been disposed of followed Calumela for eight furlongs and a half, where he took the lead and was closely followed down the back straight by Mamanuas and Sure Lady, with Forewarned doing best of the others. Reaching the straight Blue Horizon was about a length clear f oi: Mamanuas and Sure Lady, with Forewarned in close attendance. Blue Horizan kept just ahead, to win by half a length from Sure Lady, with Forewarned, which lost ground in the first furlong, three-quarters of a length away • third. Then came Mamanuas. The rest of the field either broke or failed to trot in the soft ground. Blue Horizcpn was a very hot favourite, carrying £3235 and £1950, Sure Lady £265 and £896, Forewarned £481 and £1297. Lady Moness Beaten Gold Peg led all the way for an easy win in the. Victoria Handicap. She was followed for a mile and a half by Lucky Gem, Princess Maritza, Lady Moness, Paul Collette and Scottish Lady. There was no change in the order as they came to the straight, where Lady Moness and Paul Collette made desperate efforts to catch Gold Peg, but the latter finished particularly well and had no difficulty in holding off Lady Moness and Paul Collette. Of the others, Scottish Lady and PoPP°" tunoa did best. Vimy Ridge broke badly at the start. Gold Peg carried £768 and £961, Lady Moness £1184 and £1367, Paul Collette £434 and £647. . Bexley's Pride Easily Bexley's Pride had an easy win in the Riccarton Stakes after being slow off the mark and in fifth place when the field had gone a furlong. The favourite, Jack's Son, was first out of the barrier and led for six furlongs from Iron Bar, Bex.ey_s Pride, Air Marshall, Renown s Pride, Air Marshal, Renown s Going to the mile post Jack's Son and Bexley's Pride were almost on terms with Air Marshal, Jackie Guy and Resurgum doing best of the others. From there to the straight Jack's Son and Bexley s Pride drew away and, with a furlong to go, Bexley's Pride had Jack's Son's measure and came on to win comfortably by. a length and a half from Jack's Son, with Jackie Guy 'three lengths away third, then came Resurgum. The winner carried £1533 and £1695, Jack's Son £1721 and £1821, Jackie Guy—Prince Dale bracket £1005 and £1435. A Stylish Win The American horse, Light Brigade, scored a stylish victory in the Canterbury Handicap after being placed all the way. Sir Volo made the running from Imperial Lady, Light Brigade, Tokalon and Claremorris for five furlongs where Recluse took over the lead, and with a mile and a quarter disposed of Recluse and Sir Volo were closely followed by Light Brigrade, Follow Me, Imperial Lady, Watcher and Burnham. With a mile and a half completed Recluse was beaten, and

Sir Volo and Light Brigade carried on from Follow Me, Imperial Lady, Burnham and Claremorris. On reaching the straight Light Brigade challenged Sir Volo, and in a spirited finish between the two Light Brigade beat Sir Volo very easily by two lengths with Watcher a length away third. Then came Claremorris and Burnham. Knave of Diamonds and Manpower broke at the start, and Scott Axworthy's chance was ruined by a horse breaking in front of him with a round to go. Light Brigade carried £2716 and £1972, Sir Volo £515 and £1042, and Watcher £344 and £834. A Dead-heat In a great finish for the Dominion Handicap between Will Cary and Lady Scott, the judge was unable to separate them at the winning post. Lady Scott trotted solidly all the way, but Will Cary made a break at the start arid lost a few lengths. With four furlongs covered Rangefinder, and Ordnance led just clear of Lady i Scott, Will Cary, Douglas McElwyn,! Mohican and Royal Worthy. There, was little change till approaching the: mile and a half post, when Ordnance took the lead, only to be displaced by Will Cary as they entered the straight with Rangefinder,. Royal Worthy, and Lady Scott all m close order. One hundred yards from home Will Cary got to the front and Lady Scott made a determined finish to draw level. J-. Smith, scored his second win for the day when Hilda Potts led the field home in the Empire Handicap. Parrish had took over the lead with a mile and a half to go, closely followed by Happy Man, Safety Pin, Hilda Potts, Lady Dawn and Single Star. There was little alteration until the last half mile was entered, when Hilda Potts moved up to Parrish Lad, with Safety Pin, Oxford Scholar, Lady Dawn, Single Star and Warfield most prominent of the others. Hilda Potts took the lead at the straight entrance, Safety Pin challenging her, but in the race to the post Hilda Potts always held the upper hand, | to win by half a length from Safety Pin with Lady Dawn three lengths away third.
