CRETAN PRIEST WHO SAVED MANY KIWIS
DEATH ANNOUNCED Sequel To Sufferings In Mountains (Rec. 4.30) LONDON, Nov. 3. A Cretan priest, Abbot Lagovardos, who fed and sheltered 500 or 600 New Zealand, Australian and British troops, and saved them from falling into the hands of the Germans after Crete was evacuted, and saw them safely to Egypt, died in Cairo as a result of the privations he, suffered when hiding in the mountains after the Germans put a price on his head, says Reuters Cairo correspondent.
Lagovardos organised a complete underground service for the troops. He left his monastery just in time after the Germans discovered his secret. They arrested monks and sacked the building. From the hills Lagovardos continued sending Empire troops to Egypt, but his health forced him to leave Crete in 1942.
The work he started was continued so that by the end of 1943 all the Allied soldiers who had not fallen into German hands were safe on African soil.
