STORMY WEATHER

LABOUR WEEK-END

HOLIDAY-MAKERS IN CITY

The sun shone in Auckland this morning after a stormy week-end. Black clouds still bulked in the sky, but there were enough blue patches to decide many people to continue with their holiday plans, and there was quite a holiday spirit about Queen Street. Beach pyjamas, shorts and the usual holiday attire were prominent. The ferries were popular and there were long queues at the picture theatres.

It was a decidedly unsatisfactory week-end from the point of view of holiday-makers. There were showers of rain on Friday and Saturday, climaxed by an electrical storm that passed over Auckland -yesterday afternoon and reached its peak further north. Heavy rain, loud rumblings of thunder and flashes of lightning put a stop to many picnics and hiking and cycling excursions. A number of tennis clubs delayed their openings, while two week-end golf tournaments were also postponed. . ■' ■■'■''' A power surge in lines in the western suburbs was caused by yesterdays' storm, several transformer fuses blowing out a little after three o'clock in the line through Mount Albert. ■ Heavy business was reported by transport services and hotels in the city. Extra boats were added to the Waiheke Island service and an extra train was scheduled to ' leave for Wellington this afternoon. Rainfall for the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. to-day was .15in. The fall for the month to date is 7.15 in, making this the wettest October for three years.
