SALE OF SLY GROG
ELDERLY LABOURER FINED
Charged with selling liquor without a license and keeping liquor for sale, Claude Marshall Henning, a labourer of 67, appeared in the Police Court to-day and pleaded guilty. It was stated by Senior-Sergeant Sparks that Henning was accosted by the police 'as he was entering Hobson Wharf on Saturday. He admitted having sold two bottles of wine to an American serviceman for five dollars. His home was searched, when another 10 bottles of wine were found. Henning said he had purchased a dozen bottles of wine with the idea of selling them. This was the first time he had been in trouble.
In pleading for leniency on Henning's behalf, Mr. Urquhart said the offence was a sudden, isolated lapse. Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., said that in view of Henning's age and the fact that there had not been many sly grog cases before the Court recently, he would not send him to prison. A fine of £20 was imposed on the charge of selling. On the other charge Henning was convicted and discharged.
