BABIES CARED FOR

HAPPY HOMES FOUND

WOMEN'S FINE VENTURE

Since April last Mrs. Alexander Hodge and helpers from the Council of Christian Women have taken care of ten little babies who belonged to unmarried mothers. Both mothers and babies have been minded and suitable and loving homes have been found for the children. "We do our best," said Mrs. Hodge, "to see that the right children get into the right homes. The cases are studied carefully so that the baby will suit the couple it goes to. We have received letters from two of the mothers saying 'how much like its father the baby is getting,' which is indicative of how studying type can help." With the minding of unmarried mothers, the Council of Christian Women is branching out into a new line. Mrs. Hodge and her helpers have taken the babies into their own homes. Seven of the children have found homes where all concerned are very happy. Three little boys are still waiting for homes which will be suitable. Mrs. Hodge stressed the necessity for the right baby to go to the right home. The subject was opening up a wide field of study and every endeavour was being made to ensure the happiness of the unmarried mother, the little child itself and the parents by adoption. A home has now been taken by Mrs. Hodge, at 60, Epsom Avenue, to welcome both unmarried mothers and their babies. It is in secluded surroundings, with 12 rooms, and will offer an opportunity for rest and "reconstruction." It will be possible to take about 24 babies, who may be left there until they are adopted. It is hoped that the public will assist with donations to run this home. •
