RAILWAY SERVICES
POST-WAR IMPROVEMENT
A general outline of the post-war reconstruction plans of the Railway Department was given by the assist-ant-General Manager of the Department, Mr. C. R. Riesop, at the annual reunion of Auckland branch of the Railway Officers' Institute last night. Mr. F. C. Cleverly presided over an attendance of about 70 members of the institute including Mr. F. J. McAuley, chief accountant of the Railway Department, Mr. J. W. Shepherd, North Island president of the instate, and Mr. M. F. Gembitsky, district traffic manager at Auckland.
General expansion of the Railway Department was provided for in the plans, but the Department was most concerned with the housing of its employees, said Mr. , Riesop. Arrangements had been made for the construction of a certain number of State houses for railwaymen each year throughout New Zealand. There were very few road services not under the control of the Department, continued Mr. Riesop, and improvement of the services was also part of the scheme. Likely competition from air services was under consideration. He agreed with the Minister of Railways, Mr. Semple, that since the State had spent so much on the provision of aerodromes the Government should operate these services.
