ISLANDER IMPRISONED

STORY NOT BELIEVED

Found guilty of theft and false pretences, William Lewis Gentry, aged 42, was represented by Mr. Robinson when he appeared before Mr. Justice Fair to-day for sentence. Counsel said that the accused, a man of Island blood, assured him that what he did was to endeavour to restore to two American servicemen £60 which had been stolen by. a Maori. He had told the Maori he would get him £60 worth of whisky, and got the £60 from him, and paid it to the Americans. The prisoner had been unable to bring the Americans to give evidence at his trial, said counsel, because they had left on active service while he was in custody.

His Honor said this was a very different explanation from that given by prisoner at his trial and could not be 1 given ■ credence. Prisoner would be sentenced to five months' hard labour. . .
