BAR TO D.S.O.

AWARD TO ADMIRAL FORMER N.Z. COMMODORE The award of a bar to his D.S.O. has been made - to Rear-Admiral Fischer Burges Watson, D.5.0., R.N., for "outstanding courage, leadership, resource and determination during the assault on Anzio and in subsequent bombardments in support of the Army."

Rear-Admiral Burges Watson was appointed commodore of' the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy in Juiie, 1932, a position which he held until 1935, when he was posted to the retired list. He has served for 44 years in the Navy and for 10 years commanded destroyers. For his service in the last war he was

awarded the D.S.O. and was mentioned in dispatches. Before coming to New Zealand he was naval assistant to the Second Sea Lord and at one time commanded H.M.S. Nelson. In the earlier stages of the present war Rear-Admiral Burges Watson was appointed Commodore of Convoy and in November, 1941, gave a heartening report on the improvement in convoy conditions since the beginning of the war. As a lieutenant Rear-Admiral Burges Watson played Rugby football for the Navy and for England.
