BOOK FOR SCHOOLS "MAN AND HIS WORLD" Some further light was thrown upon the book, "Man and His World," adversely commented upon by Bishop Liston on Sunday evening, when the Auckland Education Beard met this morning.
When the subject was raised by Mr. J. Patterson, the senior inspector of schools in the Auckland district, Mr. H. McChesney, stated that he knew nothing about the book personally. In April of this year the New Zealand Educational Gazette published a list of 170 books authorised for use in secondary schools. The book in question was one of those included in this list under the heading of "Social Studies." It was in two sections— "The Evolution of the Old World to 1485" and "The Evolution of the Modern World to 1940."
Mr. W. I. Bowyer stated that the impression given by Bishop Liston's published remarks was that the volume was one of the main books for use in the schools in the future.
The senior inspector explained that the list was one which authorised the use of the books contained in it in secondary schools, technical schools, combined schools and secondary departments of district high s'chools. The px-jncipal of a school could select from the list those books which he considered suitable for use in his particular school.
He added that he had not read or seen the bcok, but considered copies would be available in the libraries.
