U.S. Troops Attack Remnants Of Jap Division PLIGHT IN NEW GUINEA Rec. 1.30 p.m. SYDNEY, this day. American ground forces in British New Guinea have taken the initiative against the remnants of the trapped Japanese Eighteenth Army. They have crossed Drinimur River on a two and a half mile front, and are driving eastward. More than 400 additional Japanese dead have been counted. _ , ~ In the far west of Dutch New Guinea, the Americans who landed at Sansapor on Sunday, now hold ten miles of the beach' and are expanding their position. " Japanese shipping reported destroyed in General Mac Arthur s communique to-day, includes a 5000ton transport, a 1000-ton freighter and two coastal vessels.
