MINE-LAYING OPERATIONS
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones, has been advised by the Admiralty that the King has approved the award of the Distinguished Service Cross for good service in minelaying to TemporaryLieutenant Walter Charles Drake, Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve, of Wellington. Lieutenant Drake was married in the United States last year. He was born in 1919 in Christchurch. In civilian life he was a bank officer and joined the R.N.Z.N. as an ordinary seaman (scheme B) in 1940.
