WHAT THE PIANO TUNER TOLD THE LADY As Betty had always shown an interest in music, we decided to have our little girl taught to play. We managed <.0 secure a piano privately. It seemed a good instrument and only needed tuning, so we telephoned Begg's and arranged for a piano tuner to call. We told him we knew very little about pianos, and asked iXm what he thought of our purchase. It appears that there can be many hidden defects in a piano that only an expert can detect. For instance, the action may be worn, or out-of-date, and incapable of being repaired or modernised. The plank may be strained or the frame may be cracked. These faults produce tuning difficulties. A piano with a strained plank or cracked frame cannot be tuned up to correct pitch or tuned correctly at any pivch. A sunken sound board affects tone. Ana then the piano may have borer ! The piano tuner told us our piano haci a worn action. In normal times this defect could be quickly remedied, but under to-day's conditions —shortage of skilled labour and special materials — they could not even look at it for some weeks. So Betty's music lessons will have to be postponed for some time. If you contemplate purchasing a piano, buy from a recognised Piano House. Buy from Begg's. Begg's thoroughly inspect and recondition all used instruments offered for resale in their showrooms. Their prices are based on the actual worth of the instruments. Charles Begg and Co., Ltd., is a national institution with modern stores in ten cities, arid a reputation for integrity extending over 82 years. Begg's pay best cash prices for pianos of all makes, and invite owners to make them an offer or to ask for Begg's "fluation.—Advt.
