RED CROSS COMMISSIONER "If there are any plums going, they should go to the men who have made the most sacrifice of the war, said Mr. K. C. Aekins when a successor to Major W. G. Tweedy, who is returning to New Zealand after being Red Cross commissioner of the Auckland Provincial Joint Council of St. John and the Red Cross in the Middle East, was discussed at the adjourned annual meeting of the council last night. Mr. Aekins said that the position was worth. £1000 a year and expenses. He was of the opinion that the post should be filled by a man who had served in the present war and not by a veteran of the last war. He had in mind Major G. Nichols, who was unfit for military duties overseas but was extremely anxious to return to the Middle East. He had sailed with the First Echelon and had seen four years' experience. He was a barrister and solicitor and a qualified accountant. The council decided to forward Major Nichols' application for the position to the Wellington Jomt Council. ' •_ ... ~,„ Mrs. T. Bassett moved that the Wellington council be recommended to advertise future full-time appointments in connection with its work and to give preference to returned servicemen. . , The motion was carried, as was also a further resolution moved by Mrs. Bassett recommending that an paid positions be reviewed and preference given to servicemen where possible. . .
