TWO TRAINERS FINED
TRANSPORT OF RACEHORSES 30-MILE LIMIT EXCEEDED (0.C.) WANGANUI, this day. Charged in the Marton Magistrate's Court, before Mr. A. Coleman, S.M., with transporting racehorses more than 30 miles between Hawera and Marton, Leo Ernest George was fined £15.
Mr. C. M. Hornblow, traffic inspector, stated that a horse float with two horses arrived from Hawera,_ a distance of 81 miles. He was informed by George that the source of power was petrol. Defendant pleaded guilty. Commenting that the offence had been committed since similar cases had been tried and convictions entered, the magistrate said that the fines in the previous cases were made very low, but fines had since been increased. He appreciated the hardships under which trainers were suffering, but would have to enter a conviction.
A similar charge was preferred against William Eva for travelling from New Plymouth to Marton, a distance of 126 miles, on petrol. Defendant pleaded guilty. It was defendant's second offence, stated the magistrate, in inflicting a fine of £15.
