ANTI-HITLER PLOT
Names Of Three Conspirators Announced By Germans
LEADER COMMITS SUICIDE
Rec. 10.30 a.m. LONDON, July 27.
The Germans have announced the names of three generals who were implicated in the plot against Hitler s life. Berlin radio stated that General Ludwig Beck, who headed the plot, committed suicide when under arrest. General Olbricht, who was implicated with General Hoeppner, was shot after a court-martial. Hoeppner is under arrest pending trial.
The radio added that Ludwig Beck, who was 64 years of age and was a formes Chief of the General Staff was placed on the retired list in October, 1938. "Well-informed persons know why," the announcer commented. Olbricht was Chief of the General Army Office at Supreme Headquarters and second in command of the home forces. He held all the threads of the conspiracy in his hands.
Hoeppner, aged 57, commanded the tank corps in France and Poland. He was dismissed from the Army at the end of 1941 "after a cowardly retreat on the Eastern Front."
