CONVOY SMASHED
JAPANESE VESSELS NEAR TRUK Rec. 2 p.m. SYDNEY, this day. One vessel was probably'sunk and three left burning when Allied bombers attacked a Japanese convoy of five vessels southward bound 160 miles south of Truk. The remaining ship escaped to the north. General Mac Arthur's communique to-day also reports that the Japanese forces trapped in British New Guinea are continuing their attempts to envelop the right flank of the American positions near Afua. Elsewhere only patrol activity has been reported.
