CONTROL OF MINES
NATIONALISATION ISSUE COMMENT BY DR. EVATT PERTH, June 26. "We cannot nationalise coal mines unless we have power over production —I think we should have that power," the Attorney-General, Dr. Evatt, said when addressing one ot the largest meetings ever held at Collie on the approaching Federal powers referendum. Dr. Evatt was replying to a member of his audience who asked if the Federal Government favoured nationalisation of the mines. _ Dr. Evatt received an enthusiastic reception. He complimented Collie coalminers on their excellent wartime industrial record. "Collie has been as solid as a rock and has given the country good coal production throughout the war," he said. "Representatives of the miners have put certain suggestions to us and we will try to put them into effect " Dr." Evatt said that a "Yes" vote at the referendum was necessary if social and industrial security were to be enjoyed after the war.
