PENICILLIN SUPPLIES

CONTROL OF DISTRIBUTION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. The first regular weekly supply of penicillin is expected to arrive from Australia shortly, according to an announcement by the Minister of Health, Mr. Nordmeyer. An order in to-night's Gazette gives details of the conditions under which penicillin will be available for use in public hospitals and for private cases. Until supplies increase considerably it will be necessary for its use to be subjected to a control order to ensure that restricted supplies shall be kept for cases who need it most urgently and because the overseas authorities who authorised supply to New Zealand desire it to be available to our population on the same terms as it is available to their own populations. In the meantime the pathologists in the four main centres will act as representatives of the Department in the control and distribution of penicillin. The great majority of cases will be treated in public hospitals. The pathologists are, however, empowered to supply penicillin if it is available and if they think fit to a medical practitioner for use outside a public hospital.
