RETIRING FROM SEA
WELL-KNOWN FERRY MASTER CAPTAIN B. B. IRWIN'S CAREER (P.A.) WELLINGTON, this day. Captain Basil Brooke Irwin, master of the Rangatira, is about to retire after service for more than 46 years with the Union Steamship Company. For the past 26 years he has commanded various ferry steamers between Wellington and Lyttelton. Captain Irwin commanded the Meraroa for three years, the Maori for nine years, the Wahine for four years and the Rangatira for seven years, interspersed with short relieving periods. He has served the Union. Company longer than any other master up to now. He has been a member of the New Zealand Merchant Service Guild of Masters and Officers since its formation, and for many years he was its vicepresident.
