GOOD CORNWALL TRIAL

ACTIVITIES AT TAKANINI The Cornwall Handicap candidate Cornish, Cambria and Hazroy were rc sponsible for an excellent effort over ; mile on the inside grass at Takanini thi morning, the going being in good orde for this period of the season. Cambrii took the initiative early and reached th half-mile post in 51s, at this stage beini half a length •in front of Hazroy, wit] Cornish six lengths away. After conn pleting the mile in 1.46 3-55,. Cornish hai reduced the gap, and was going well along side Hazroy at the end, with Cambri; beaten off. Cornish is not usually a gooi track worker and this was his best effor for some considerable time. Gray stated last evening that Th( Dozer would not be a competitor at anj of the winter fixtures and is to be rele gated to the paddock for a spell. LATEST SCKATCHINGS Great Northern Steeplechase.—Thi Cardinal, 2 p.m. yesterday; Kanui Ti Pai, 9 a.m. to-day. DUE FOR A TURN Heidelberg has finished third in eacl of his three starts as a steeplechaser thi: season, and is due for a winning turn He will be ridden in his Dunedin en gagements by the Invercargill apprentice W. Hillis. MATADOR BACK IN WORK Matador, after the recent race meeting at Greenmeadows, was given a light letup. but is back in active training. No definite early spring programme has yet been set for this half-brother to Battledress, but all going well he will race In the spring classics and then perhaps in the New Zealand Derby in November. LEADING TRAINER The Awapuni trainer, G. W. New, will commence the last two months of the season with a 26-23 lead over F. Smith. As New has some jumpers in his stable, and will have more opportunities of racing his team, his chance of retaining his position is bright. H-. Dulieu, who also specialises in jumpers, is the only competitor with any chance of challenging the two leaders, and he is seven points below New. A BRIGHT PROSPECT Up to the present Smirke has proved a rero stayer, but in some of his twomile races he has shown a quickness off the mc.rk that suggests that he may do well in races of a shorter journey. In the Tinwald Handicap, 3.34 class, at Ashburton on June 5, Smirke is set to start off the limit, and in this race he should beat the majority. Smirke is a six-year-old gelding by Rey de Oro, and he goes back to great staying blood in his dam Virginia, which was by Denver Huon. In Smirke, J. Grice may yet produce a pacer of the. highest class. MAY RACE AGAIN Salutation was retired from racing at the end of her three-year-old season, but she missed at her . first season at the stud, and it is thought that she is not in foal again this season. Mr. H. D. Greenwood is considering returning her to F. A. Roberts to be given another trial at racing. Salutation was one of the best three-year-olds of her year, her successes that season including the New Zealand Oaks Stakes, Wellington Guineas, Dunedin Guineas and the Thompson and Anniversary Handicaps at Trentham. Salutation is by Theio from Queen's Salute, both of which claim The Tetrarch as grandparent. Salutation was never over-raced, so it may not be difficult to give her another successful preparation.
