TIRPITZ BOMBED

Warship Still In Alten Fiord, Norway DIRECT HITS SCORED British Official Wireless Rec. 1 p.m. RUGBY, April 3. Naval aircraft carried out a successful bombing attack on the German battleship Tirpitz in Alten Fiord, northern Norway, states an Admiralty announcement. Several direct hits were obtained. Tirpitz,

which is stated to have a displacement of 43,000 tons, was attacked by British naval aircraft on March 9, 1942, and on that occasion retired under cover of a smoke-screen towards the Norwegian coast. In September, last year, midget submarines crippled Tirpitz at Alten Fiord.

On October 11 last the Admiralty announced an attack on Tirpitz by British midget submarines. The attack had taken place on September 22, but had not been reported immediately for security reasons. Photographs showed later that the vessel had not moved from her anchorage, and there were dark patches of oil on the water surrounding her. Small craft, which were apparently repair ships, were busy round the warship. Three midget submarines were lost in the action.
