FARMERS' PRODUCTION

GOVERNMENT AND CRITICS (By Telegraph— Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, thi;; day. Declarations from the Opposition that the fanner was disheartened and consequently was reducing production was in reality an attack on the fafmer and not on the Government, contended Mr. Munro (Govt., Dunedin N.) in the Address-in-Reply debate in the House of Representatives yesterday. It had been said by the member for Marsden (Mr. Murdoch) that the dairy farmer would produce more butterfat if the Government provided a subsidy, added Mr. Munro. Mr. Murdoch: That is not quite correct. rMr. Munro declared that the Opposition blamed the Government for the shortage of manpower and of fertilisers, instead of explaining the serious food position in England and the need to produce more. He referred to another Nationalist's criticism of the use of serpentine rock with superphosphate.

The .suggestion had been made, said Mr. Munro, that this was "a ramp." Such a serious allegation, which, if true, would reflect on a Minister ancl a Government Department, ought to be investigated by a commission of inquiry.
