STEADY FALL

WAR EXPENDITURE

Prospect Of Australia's Bill Not Reaching Estimate N.Z. Press Association—Copyright Rec. noon. CANBERRA, this day. A steady fall In Australia's recent war expenditure is revealed by a Treasury statement. The total war expenditure in February was £39.688,000, the statement shows. This is at a rate of less than £480,000,000 a year.

The Budget • estimate for the current year was £570,000,000. If the expenditure for the remaining four months of the present financial year remains on the level of the past two months, the Australian expenditure on war in 1943-44 will fall short of the Treasury estimate by about £50,000,000.

The decrease is probably due to the decrease in the Government's payroll, because of releases from Army and munitions works, and a slackening in the programme of the Allied Works Council.
