FLYER'S ADVENTURE
ESCAPE AND RECAPTURE PROMOTED WHILE PRISONER The comparatively rare experience of gaining promotion while a prisoner of war has been the lot of Sergeant-Pilot C. R. Howells, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Howells, of the Globe Hotel, Wakefield Street, Auckland.
Advice has just been received through the Minister of Defence that Sergeant-Pilot Howells has been promoted to the temporary rank of
Warrant-Officer. He left New Zealand in 1941 for Canada, where he gained his wings before proceeding to Britain. While on one of many missions over enemy territory he was forced down in the North Sea and after being adrift for three days was picked up by a German seaplane. He became a prisoner of war in July,
While in Germany, Warrant-Officer Howells made a determined bid for freedom, and after many exciting adventures and hairbreadth escapes reached. Czechoslovakia, where he was recaptured and returned to his former prison camp by the Nazis.
