GLASS PIONEER
BUILT UP INDUSTRY
MR. WALTER KERNS' DEATH
An outstanding figure in the New Zealand glass industry, Mr. Walter Kerns, has died at his home in Penrose at the age of 61. Mr. Kerns, who was manager of the New Zealand Glass Manufacturers' Company, Pty., Ltd., played a vital part in the development of the industry in New Zealand over more than 20 years, and guided it through its most difficult period.
Mr. Kerns began work in the glass industry in Melbourne in 1897, later taking up employment on the staff of an Adelaide factory. When the Australian Glass Manufacturers' Company decided to extend its activities to the Dominion he was appointed manager in New Zealand. He arrived in this country in July, 1922. With the assistance of the parent company in Australia, the New Zealand industry domiciled at Penrose became firmly established. Keenly interested in many sporting and social activities, Mr. Kerns was a past president of the Onehunga Bowling Club, a member of the Auckland Racing Club and of the Auckland Golf Club. He was a member of the winning teams in several bowling tournaments, including that of the Rotorua rink in 1940.
Mr. Kerns is survived by his wife and one daughter.
