FIRST OPEN-CAST MINE
SATISFACTORY PRODUCTION (0.C.) WELLINGTON, Monday. Satisfaction with the production of coal from the first open-cast mine in the Waikat.o was expressed this evening by the Minister of Mines, Mr. Webb. Mr. Webb said that 1200 tons had been produced on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Minister stated that part of the WestportStockton colliery in the Buller field would be worked on the open-cast principle, while there would probably be two more open-cast mines in the Buller field, two in the Reefton field and two more in the Waikato. He hoped that good tonnage would be produced from them.
