JAPANESE RETREAT

I ACTIVITY IN NORTH BURMA Rec. 1.30 p.m. RUGBY, March 8. In Arakan on Monday there was an increase of Japanese artillery fire in the western sector, states South-East Asia Headquarters. Tanks destroyed bunker positions in Maungdaw and our troops attacked and captured ground south of the MaungdawButhidaung road. On the North Burma front remnants of Japanese forces are retreating from Shingban. The Japanese who are falling back are remaining west of the Nambyu River, whicn an American road block prevented them from crossing. There was extensive R.A.F. activity and many places were bombed, including Bangkok, supply positions and communications north and south of Burma. No Allied aircraft is missing. Enemy air activity was slight.
