VOICE OF THE PEOPLE

QUESTION OF INTERPRETATION

(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.)

WELLINGTON, this day.

"The older members of this House, particularly Cabinet Ministers, have lost touch with the common people. They have forgotten the existence of the man in the street," declared Mr. Smith (Nat., Bay of Islands) jn the House of Representatives yesterday, when speaking in the Address-in-Reply debate. "As one who has recently relinquished the title of John Citizen," he continued, "I say that we can, and we will, assist the Government to govern the country with the people, and not merely to govern. That way lies Fascism and Nazi-ism, and we have had too much of it."

Mr. Smith said the Government had taken notice of the loud voice of the rowdy militant section of the community, and interpreted it as the voice of the people.
