MATCH AT DEYONPORT
SHORE BEATEN BY A RUN
After a very exciting match at Devonport last Saturday Training College surprised by defeating North Shore by the margin of only one run. Training College, who batted first, settled down to some hard hitting and treated all bowling alike, i\. Dobson in particular being a thorn in the side of the Shore trundlers. She earned her bat for 28, and was associated W"h, Y- Laws (22) in a fine last wicket stand for 43 runs before Laws was caught, lhe side had made SO runs. Bowling honours were Squally divided between H. rhompson, S. Foote and G. Gooder, who took three wickets for 21, 14 and 20 respectively. The Hutchings sisters opened the bowling for Training College, J. Vivian and S. Foote batting very cautiously to their slows. B. Hutchings was sending up high slow lobs which just trickled to the batsmen's feet, and the seasiders were obviously ill at ease. P. Hutchings quickly found a length and had S. Foote caught mid-on when she had made 11, M. Koefoed going to the same bowler the same way when her score was 4. J. Vivian made 21 before being smartly run out by V. Olson, and shortly after H. Thompson met the same fate, having compiled 19. With four wickets down for 42 and 25 minutes to play Shore adopted hit and run tactics, P. Wain making 14 before being run out, and the side had put on 79 for nine wickets with one over to go when G. Price went out lbw without addition. A feature of the innings was the fact that no batsman was bowled, there being four run-outs, two stumpings and three caught and one lbw decision.
At Melville Park, Mt. Albert intermediates defeated Training College 127 to 22, and 74 for nine. Mt. Albert had first use of the wicket, L. Heape being undefeated with 63 in a very fine knock which included 12 fours. N. Cliffe 21 and I. Lockwood 11 were the other batsmen who reached double figures. Bowling for Training College H. Norton, four for 35 and E. Wilcox four for 24 were the most successful. Of Training College's reply of 22 only E. McDonald, with 12 runs, looked comfortable at the crease, and N. Cliil'e was bowling a steady length and demanded respect at all times. She took six wickets for 6 runs, Lockwood taking three for 14. In the follow-on McDonald again held the fort for Training College, making 22 not out, E. Gough 14 and Wilcox 12. There was still one wicket to fall at stumps.
