"A SELF-CENTRED NATION"

NEED OF WIDER VISION

(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter)

WELLINGTON, this day.

"We are growing into a selfish and self-centred nation, and the tendency is to grow more insular," said Mr. Gerard (Nat., Mid-Canterbury), speaking in the Address-in-Reply debate in the House of Representatives yesterday. The town and country had been drawing apart, he said, and an effort had to be made to bridge that gap. It could be done if both sections tried to understand the problems of the other.

"Reading the speeches of our leading public citizens," he added, "one is struck by the fact that we consider we lead the world in all things. I make an appeal for the development of a wider vision, and it is for us in this House to give a lead."
