DELIVERY DELAYS
CARRIERS' COMPLAINT
SUGGESTED CONFERENCE
A request by Auckland carriers for a conference with the superintendent of the Auckland Harbour Board and the Union Steam Ship Company to discuss delivery methods in connection with port shipping was received at a meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board yesterday afternoon.
The matter was brought to the notice of the board by Mr. E J Phelan, who said the Auckland Carriers' Association had written stating that on Friday 200 large motor vehicles were parked in three lanes from the Queen's wharf to Anzac Avenue awaiting discharge. Apart from the fact that over £100,000 of capital represented in the vehicles was lying idle for hours, the carriers suffered considerable loss of earning power, as the majority of the goods were carted on a tonnage basis. It was asked whether delivery of goods could be made to the wharf sheds during the week. "To continue the present delivery methods," continued the letter, "is wasteful of motor vehicles and manpower, and decidedly uneconomical for operators." ■
The matter was referred to the board-in-committee and to the superintendent for a report.
