FULL PASSES GIVEN

PRISON CAMP STUDENTS JUNGLE SOLDIERS' PROBLEMS (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The efforts of the war concessions committee of the University of New Zealand in endeavouring to alleviate the handicap which the requirements of military service had placed on the academic work of many students, was referred to by the Chancellor, the Hon. J. A. Hanan, in his address to the Senate of the University to-day. He said that during the year ten scrips had been received from New Zealanders in prison camps in Germany. The examiners, under instruction to mark to normal standards, had without question awarded full passes to nine of those scrips. In the tenth case the examiner reported that as the theoretical work done clearly showed the student's knowledge of his subject, and as a slight shortage of marks could quickly be made up had the student been able to perform certain practical exercises usually undertaken in his subject, a War Concession pass should definitely be granted by the committee. Another instance of study under difficult conditions appeared when among numerous scripts returned from Pacific bases there were two of which the supervisor reported that the candidate had written them in a foxhole upon an island in an advanced area. The examination papers had reached the supervisor unaccompanied by the usual supply of writing paper and the work was done on leaves taken from the notebook of a nearby officer. Despite the obviously difficult conditions of examination this candidate passed in two subjects, each one showing a comfortable margin of marks.
