LEGION OF MERIT
AWARD TO U.S. ADMIRAL For his meritorious conduct in the performance of service in the Pacific, Rear - Admiral Herbert Fairfax Leary, United States Navy, has been awarded the Legion of Merit. Admiral Leary organised the first task force in the Pacific war, states the accompanying citation. He assisted in the establishment of a naval base, in the Fiji Islands, and through his courageous leadership and organising skill made a distinctive contribution to the successful operations of the forces under his command. The first United States admiral to visit New Zealand after Pearl Harbour Admiral Leary was appointed to command the combined naval forces of the New Zealand and Australian areas, having the title of Commander, Anzac Force. This arrangement was modified when the Southwest and South Pacific areas were separated for operational purposes. Admiral Leary later became commander of battleships, Pacific Fleet. He was detached from the Pacific theatre in April this year.
