PRISONERS OF WAR
EMPLOYMENT IN CANADA SATISFACTORY PRODUCTION OTTAWA, Dec. 17. The Department of Labour announces that over 2400 prisoners of war are now working at 25 labour projects across Canada, m.ifnly connected with the production of fuel wood. The announcement describes the production as "very satisfactory." Some use is being made of the services of prisoners at farm work. Over 60 have been assigned to farm jobs near Ottawa, and 107 in the Brooks district, Alberta. In addition, over 500 prisoners of war were used on daily work during the harvest, particularly in sugar beet areas in Alberta. . In the labour projects now in operation accommodation for prisoners and guards is provided by the employer. Employers pay the Department of Labour for the services of the prisoners at the going rate of wages for such work adjusted to the work output. The prisoners receive from the Department a daily rate of working pay which is fixed in accordance with provisions of the International Convention governing the employment of prisoners of war.
