SURF CLUB RECORD
MEMBERS IN ARMED FORCES The adventurous spirit of members of the Piha Surf Life-Saving Club is illustrated in the annual report, which shows that 25 have served fh the armed forces. Of this number, 16 have gone overseas and two are prisoners of war. An interesting feature is the number who have volunteered for the Air Force. Totalling 15, they include FlightLieutenant J. D. Rae, D.F.C.. who made a great name for himself as a fighter pilot and became a prisoner of war in Germany when his motor cut out.
The other decoration awarded to a member of the club was the Distinguished Service Order, received by Lieutenant N. C. Gardner for bravery at El Alamein. Only in exceptional cases is this award made to a junior officer.
The report states that membership was reduced to a nominal figure through the demands of the services, but during the year new members helped the club to maintain an efficient patrol of the Piha Beach. These new members all passed the Royal Life-Saving test and obtained their bronze medallions. All are fully qualified surfmen and fine boatmen.
