COUPONS FOR TOWELS

SUGGESTION TO MINISTER

A suggestion that special coupons should be made available for the purchase of towels and elastic was made by Mr. Clyde Carr, M.P. for Timaru, in a letter to the Minister of Supply, Mr. Sullivan. "Special provision has been made in the third series ration books, now on issue, for the rationing of household linen," wrote Mr. Sullivan in his reply. "It is expected that this measure of control will enable a better distribution of towels, etc., to be made by retailers, and so give consumers an opportunity of securing at least some part of their needs. The position in regard to elastic is that only very small supplies are coming into the country, and I regret that it is not possible to include this commodity under the coupon scheme. However, consideration is given from time to time to the inclusion of new commodities in the coupon rationing scheme, and should the position improve the necessary steps will be taken in the matter of a fair distribution."
